50 years of Mercedes-Benz Accident Research: Reality as the yardstick

Mercedes-Benz Accident Research has been systematically studying accidents for 50 years. Thanks to the cooperation with the Interior Ministry of Baden-Württemberg, the police reports serious accidents involving a current Mercedes-Benz or smart model that occur within a radius of about 200 kilometres of Sindelfingen. The work of the researchers usually starts on the accident vehicle in the workshop to which it was taken. In the next stage, the accident scene is visited to reconstruct the course of the accident even if only one vehicle was involved. Once they possess all the information, the researchers systematically reconstruct the collision. Finally, the results are compared with the data from other accidents, so that over time, the automotive engineers get a precise picture of typical damage patterns and gain insights for the development of new, even more effective protection systems. die Presse-Partner wrote the press kit.

Consolidation of worldwide vehicle testing in one location

Immendingen has a key role in the development of the mobility of the future: this is where Mercedes-Benz AG is consolidating its worldwide vehicle testing, including the further development of alternative drives such as hybrids and electric vehicles under the product and technology brand EQ. Future assistance systems and automated driving functions are also tested here. Immendingen is located in Baden-Württemberg, 130 kilometres to the south of Stuttgart and 40 kilometres to the north of Radolfzell on Lake Constance. die Presse-Partner wrote the press kit.

60 years of crash testing at Mercedes-Benz

For 60 years now, Mercedes-Benz has been really crunching them up: the first crash test in the history of the brand took place on 10 September 1959. A test car slammed head-on into a solid obstacle. This marked the beginning of a new era in safety research. From then on, this made it possible to study the behaviour of vehicles and occupants in car accidents more closely using test cars and crash test dummies. At present, the Technology Centre for Vehicle Safety (TFS) in Sindelfingen conducts about 900 crash tests. die Presse-Partner wrote the press kit.

Take a break: ATTENTION ASSIST is celebrating its tenth anniversary

Whether with milk and sugar, or black, whether brewed or espresso, from a large pot or in a tiny cup: coffee has fans all over the world. And the Germans love it too. On average, Germans drink around 164 litres of coffee each per year. As an homage to these aromatic beans, the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) has proclaimed 1 October to be International Coffee Day. Mercedes-Benz also uses the wake-up effect of coffee: ten years ago, Mercedes-Benz presented the drowsiness warning system ATTENTION ASSIST as a world first. This assistance system can recognise typical signs of fatigue and prompt drowsy drivers to take a break. The intuitively recognisable symbol for this is a stylised coffee cup in the instrument cluster. ATTENTION ASSIST is now standard equipment in all Mercedes-Benz car model series. More than 14 million vehicles featuring it have already been delivered to customers. die Presse-Partner wrote the press release.

Reducing the risk of accidents on icy roads with car-to-x communication

In the coming winter, in cooperation with the district of Zollernalb in Southern Germany, Mercedes-Benz will test how safety on wintry roads and the efficiency of district winter services can be improved with car-to-x communication. Mercedes-Benz passenger cars equipped with car-to-x technology, whose owners have activated the Live Traffic Service, will provide the necessary data for the pilot tests. Once the ESP® or ABS sensors of these vehicles have recognised slippery road conditions, this information including the GPS data is sent to the Daimler Vehicle Backend in real time, using the mobile telephone network. This anonymised information is displayed on digital maps in the two road maintenance depots of the Zollernalb district in real time. die Presse-Partner wrote the press release.

Mercedes-Benz ESF 2019: New safety ideas for a new mobility

Electric drive systems and automated driving are key technologies for the mobility of the future. This leads to changes in the requirements for in-car safety technology: first, much more flexible seating positions in the interior of such vehicles require a different form of occupant protection. And secondly, empathy and trust are central factors for the acceptance of self-driving vehicles. Other road users must be able to recognise intuitively what an automated vehicle intends to do, as in many situations there will be no driver to communicate this. With the new Experimental Safety Vehicle ESF 2019, Mercedes-Benz is giving an insight into the ideas that the company's safety experts are researching and working on. Among the one dozen or so innovations, some are near-series developments and some look well into the future. die Presse-Partner wrote the press kit.
